sony is a corporation. it, you know, suffered significant damage. there were threats against its employees. i am sympathetic to the concerns that they faced. having said all that, yes, i think they made a mistake. >> president obama disagrees with sony in his end of the year speech. the big revelations in today's end of the year address. >> good afternoon, everyone. i'm michelle griego. >> i'm brian hackney. just moments ago, president obama wrapped up his end of the year address. when asked about the sony hack, he made a bold statement about the company's decision to cancel the release of the movie "the interview." >> yes, i think they made a mistake. i wished they had spoken to me first. i -- i would have told them, do not get into, um, a pattern in which you're intimidated by these kinds of criminal attacks. >> the president went on to say that dictators cannot start

imposing censorship here in the u.s. the white house confirmed that north korea was behind the cyber attack on sony. when asked about his policy on cuba, this is what he had to say. >> gives us an opportunity for a different outcome because suddenly cuba is open to the world in ways that it has not been before. >> mr. obama believes opening up relations with cuba can, over time, open the door to greater freedom for the cubans. the president will face a republican-controlled congress for the first time in the new year. republicans have already signaled their intent to take on the president over immigration and the affordable care act that could shape the final two years of his presidency. the president and first family will remain in hawaii through new year's. congress will be back on january 6. a san jose gunman is on the run this morning after shooting a man several hours ago. police tried arresting the suspect but he got away. right now kpix 5's kiet do is live in san jose where police

are in a manhunt. kiet. >> reporter: yeah. san jose police have their work cut out for them. they are searching an area with a two-block radius densely populated with a lot of apartments and it's going to take all day. it was a surreal scene as residents casually waited outside while heavily armed s.w.a.t. officers equipped with assault rifles slowly and methodically searched the apartments for the alleged gunman. this family had a newborn in a car carrier. we had a front row seat to the drama unfolding near leigh avenue and southwest expressway where police searched under cars and tried to track the suspect's scent. police say a man with a gun fled into the neighborhood. investigators think he may have shot another man around 5 a.m. on the 1700 block of southwest expressway just a few blocks away. officers chased him into the large cluster of apartments. how much danger are these neighbors in right now? >> well, right now, it's uncertain. obviously, the suspect that

we're looking for, um, already committed a violent offense against somebody and again unknown what the relationship was between the suspect and victim but we don't have any indication that the suspect is targeting anyone else. >> reporter: two schools sheltered in place including black ford elementary school which canceled an awards ceremony and christmas party. many kids took their children out of school just in case. >> the assembly guy cancelled. >> the school is locked down. >> reporter: are you sad about the cancellation of the party? >> yes. >> oh,. >> reporter: what are you going to do now? >> i just going to sleep. >> reporter: and so the s.w.a.t. team has been searching for the better part of two hours now so they are collapsing the search area which means that the "shelter in place" order at black ford elementary school has been lifted but at valley christian it is still in place. the difference between a shelter in place and lockdown is that in a lockdown you actually barricade and lock the doors. also, the victim is in the

hospital with non-life- threatening injuries. we have a general description of the suspect, black man, 6 feet tall, wearing dark clothing. kiet do, kpix 5. a terrifying moment at san jose's blackford elementary school during morning drop-off. a parent had a seizure behind the wheel sending the vehicle into the school. officials turned the car off. the child was trying to get out when it happened and had minor injuries. the parent went to the hospital to get checked. more rain falling in the bay area as you have noticed raising the prospect of flooding. kpix 5 reporter anne makovec in tiburon where residents and business owners are carefully watching and waiting. hi, anne. >> reporter: businesses here are prepared. you can tell they have their sandbags already lined up. it is raining agai right now in tiburon after several big storms already this month. lately, when it rains in tiburon, it pours. at this strip mall, stores have

sandbags ready in cases their businesses flood. >> i'm used to it. >> reporter: this therapy company was damaged two weeks ago including the carpet. >> and some of the drywall and having to replace that. it's been a mess. >> reporter: some places like the u.p.s. store haven't been able to open since the rain moved in, in early december. there are several businesses still under emergency renovation after stormwater pumps failed this month and the parking lot flooded. the pumps are back in action today. but the flood damage is still fresh. >> once it starts raining, you know, two or three days in a row, it doesn't stop, then i get scared. >> reporter: myra says there were 19" of rain in her dry- cleaning shop. she took these photos of the standing water and of the nasty damage left behind. this time, she has her sandbags standing by. >> we are just trying to keep it safe and keep everything off the floor, too. you never know. >> reporter: there's no shortage of customers at the

shops that are open today, with no problems dealing with the deluge. >> i think it's terrific. i mean, we needed this the last two or three years. we cannot complain about it at all. >> reporter: according to roberta we are finally going to get a chance to dry out once this storm passes through. live in tiburon anne makevoc, kpix 5. >> and here's another consequence of the rainstorm today. a big tree came down in the marina district crashing on the back of a parked car there on lombard and buchanan. one lane was blocked while the tree was removed an hour ago. as far as we know the only thing damaged was the car. today clean-up crews in san jose are doing another round of work at the site of the jungle a former homeless encampment. for years it was a shantytown of more than 200 campsites and piles of garbage. and now crews have collected tons of debris. but there are still signs of the encampment in the mud and water along coyote creek.

workers are putting up an 8- foot-tall tamper resistant fence. >> can you say with any confidence that it will not go back to the way it was? >> the city is committed to making sure that encampments like the one here at story road never occur again. >> as for coyote creek, there are still a lot of debris in the water and getting that cleared out will take a special clean-up effort by the santa clara valley water district. a bright orange glow lit up the sky over chevron's refinery in richmond last night. it was visible for miles. we got many calls from concerned residents wondering what was going on. >> and chevron said the flare- up was part of normal refinery operations. >> they tweeted it was depressurizing a process unit which sparked the flame. with the low clouds overhead and the water vapor juiced up, it looked worse than it was. >> we saw a cloud where the flames were coming up and they

were lighting up the clouds. chevron says the flare was not considered a big event. >> reporter: a boy died in a crash. a suspected drunk driver plowed into a church crowd as they were leaving a christmas concert wednesday night in redondo beach, southern california. a memorial is growing at the scene. crash. police charged the 56-year-old driver with felony vehicular manslaughter and dui. holiday shoppers may not find what they are looking for in stores due to a labor dispute at west coast ports. dock workers and their employees are far apart in negotiations for a new contract. longshoremen have tipped to work although some managers accuse them of deliberately slowing down. cargo congestion has been growing and retailers say they are seeing delays in deliveries. angel island state park will be closed to the public this weekend. park crews will spend saturday and sunday cleaning up a waste water system overflow that was caused by last week's storms.

officials say the overflow is treated water and there's no danger of it flowing into the bay. and pitcher jake peavy has agreed to a deal to stay with the giants for two years. according to cbs sports, the deal is worth $24 million. peavy was traded to the giants from boston this year. for his career he is 139-111 with a 3.53 e.r.a. and more than 2,000 strikeouts over 13 seasons. the weekend before christmas if you plan on traveling you're not the only one. what to expect on the road ahead. >> from the kpix 5 weather center, boy, do we have wet roads out there right now. we begin our workweek with rain and we are ending it with more rain. your complete weekend forecast as the news continues right here on kpix 5. ,, ,,,,,,,,,,

what goes down must come up and it's up. 51 this morning to 17,829 for the dow. the friday before chris is historically one of the busiest travel days of the year, the friday before christmas. more broadly travel in california is expected to break records. aaa says more than 12 million californians will hit the road this holiday season. highest number ever. and an increase of about 3% from 2013. nobody wants to deal with bad weather on a travel day. >> i just took a look. sfo still reporting two hours 29 minutes on some arriving flights. no other airport delays at this particular time. but boy, the weather is hammering the bay area again. good afternoon, everyone. let's call on our hi-def doppler radar. when you see the yellow and the oranges and the red on the screen, it's not a good thing.

we have heavy rain in the northern portion of the bay area. an inch has already accumulated throughout the north bay this morning alone. what we're looking at is a moderate cell encompassing the bay bridge, chinatown and san francisco, emeryville. now what i'm talking about. you hear those hard raindrops on the rooftops. this is another cell, this contains heavy downpour anywhere from a half to a full inch of rain within an hour and there you have it. in brentwood right off vasco road, lifting towards the stockton area, livermore, pleasanton, dublin, also some very heavy precipitation at this time. sunnyvale has a cell that's drifting into the san jose area where currently, it is mostly cloudy with the heaviest rain moving into downtown san jose. numbers are in the 50s and low 60s. the winds have been shifting around out of the south and southwest a good 15 miles per hour with occasionally a stronger gust. this is the scene looking towards the golden gate bridge. it's a bit foggy. its cloudy. we have rain. and so far san rafael has

picked up an inch of rain or close to it since 11:00 this morning. we are still waiting for the 12:00 numbers to come in. sfo your rain is coming, as well. okay here's what we need to know. our showers will begin to taper towards the evening commute but we'll still have widely spread rain showers. the showers will also linger into the north bay on saturday morning. dry weather is in the seven-day forecast. we'll share that with you. first things first this is futurecast. there's your evening drive. heavy precipitation in throughout the santa cruz mountains, los gatos, saratoga, campbell and cupertino. here's your futurecast for tomorrow morning and notice a widely scattered shower then mainly everything to the north. it will remain mostly cloudy for your saturday. so from here up into 24 hours here's some more totals for you. at least .3" of rain in the pleasanton area. nearly an inch in san jose. they are already the second wettest december on record. the number one record dates

talk about was water in the christmas tree. people don't realize that can be toxic because of the chemicals that are sometimes used in the trees as preservative. sometimes people put aspirin in there which is very toxic to cats. so cover it with plastic or foil or whatever works to keep the animals from drinking it. >> i would have not thought of that. so cover up the christmas tree water for your pet. >> then tinsel is really not okay for cats specifically what what we call a string form. sometimes it will get caught in their intestinal track and surgery will be required to get it out. >> cats like to play with the tinsel. >> then holiday ornaments if they get broken can also cause obstructions in the intestinal tract and/or may be toxic depending on what was used to make them if they are lead- based or whatever. some of the plants like mistletoe and holly are toxic so don't want to have them eat

that. >> so mistletoe and holly. what about the perpetual, um, poinsettias? >> those also. >> so you have dechristmassed most of our houses now. [ laughter ] >> and then electrical cords. people forget about that. puppies chewing on them, dogs chewing on them can cause shock. >> my dog chewed right through the electrical cord of a vacuum cleaner and lived to tell about it and i stupidly left it plugged in and lived through it. what do you see this time of year? do you see pets coming into your surgery having swallowed toys, stuff like that? >> small toys for sure. that would be an issue too especially at christmastime when people aren't paying attention to the ribbon, another one, right, if they eat the ribbon. >> so the water bowl under the tree, the tinsel, the plants, the holly, mistletoe, out of the reach and hopefully it will

storm drain, one lucky kitten is back on solid ground. >> a small gray kitten rescued last night in antioch from 10 feet underground. i had no idea we had two animal stories. he was coaxed into a cage and pulled her up. she has a pink bow indicating she has a home but so far, no one has claimed her. ladies and gentlemen, that is a complete and thorough update of all animal issues in the bay area. >> glad we got it it out.
